Hong Kong Heritage Museum - Hong Kong Railway Museum

Situated in the town center of Tai Po Market, the Hong Kong Railway Museum is an open-air museum occupying some 6,500 square meters converted from the old Tai Po Market Railway Station. Erected in 1913, the station building features the pitched roof of traditional Chinese building. It was declared a monument in 1984, refurbished and opened as a museum in 1985.

Walking route from Tai Po Market Station Exit A2

1. A 10-minute walk from Exit A2 of Tai Po Market Station to Tai Po Complex, follow the directional signage of the Museum and then through Wai Yi Street to On Fu Road by a 8-minute walk.

2. A 10-minute walk from Exit B of Tai Wo Station. First, turn right to take escalator to Tai Wo Plaza. Next, follow the passage on the right to take escalator to the ground level. Then go in the direction of Oi Wo House and Kui Wo House, and follow the directional signages of the Museum via Tai Wo Bridge and Yan Hing Street.

KMB Bus nos. 72, 72X, 73X, 74X, 75X, 271, alight at Kwong Fuk Road and then a 15-minute walk along On Fu Road.

Interchange Mini Bus no. 20A, 20C, 20K at mini bus station next to MTR Tai Po Market Station, alight at Tai Po Complex and then through Wai Yi Street to On Fu Road by a 8-minute walk.

What To See

The station building includes the exhibition gallery, old ticket office and signal cabin. Through the display of artefacts, train models and historical photos, the development of railways in Hong Kong is introduced. A series of video and multimedia programmes allow visitors to explore the past and present of Hong Kong railways in a fun and educational way.

The outdoor area features a narrow gauge steam locomotive, diesel electric engines, historical coaches, trolleys and semaphores for visitors to get in touch with railway relics.

Diesel Electric Engine No. 60

Locomotive No. 60 commenced operation in 1974, witnessing the railway freight services between Hong Kong and the Mainland reaching their peak in the 1980s and 1990s. It was retired from service in 2021.

Visiting Rules

To show proper consideration for the relics on display and to make sure our museum is a place where all visitors can enjoy in a pleasant atmosphere, please observe the following rules:

Please do not eat or drink, smoke, throw stones and pick flowers inside the museum.
Please do not bring animals and bicycles into the museum; guide dogs accompanying visually-impaired visitors are, however, allowed.
Please do not take wedding, graduation or portrait/cosplay photos inside exhibition gallery and historical coaches of the museum; please do not use tripods when taking photos in outdoor areas of the museum.
Please do not record videos inside the museum.

Barrier-free Facilities

The Museum strives to provide a barrier-free access for all. Both groups and individual visitors with special needs can use the vehicle entrance at On Fu Road. Please contact our site staf f at (852) 2653 3455 for assistance.

Currently, barrier-free facilities provided at Hong Kong Railway Museum are:

Inclement Weather Special Arrangements

Museum Opening Arrangements

1. Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 8 or above

If the signal is in force before opening hours, the Museum will remain closed.
If the signal is issued during opening hours, the Museum will be closed.
If the signal is cancelled or lowered to Signal No. 3 or below 3 hours or more before the normal closing time and conditions allow, the Museum will resume service within 2 hours. If less than 3 hours remain until closing, the Museum will remain closed for the rest of the day.

2. Black Rainstorm Warning Signal

If the signal is in force before opening hours, the Museum will remain closed.
If the signal is issued during opening hours, the Museum will remain open.
If the signal is cancelled 3 hours or more before the normal closing time and conditions allow, the Museum will resume service within 2 hours. If less than 3 hours remain until closing, the Museum will remain closed for the rest of the day.

3. "Extreme Conditions"

If “Extreme Conditions” is in force before opening hours, the Museum will remain closed.
If the Museum is already open, the opening hours may be subject to adjustment.
If "Extreme Conditions" is cancelled 3 hours or more before the normal closing time and conditions allow, the Museum will resume service within 2 hours. If less than 3 hours remain until closing, the Museum will remain closed for the rest of the day.

Museum Activities Arrangements

Indoor programmes for parents and children, children, kindergartens#, primary schools#, special schools#, child centres, elderly centres and other similar organisations (including pre-booked group guided tours)

1. Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 8 or above (including Pre-No. 8 Special Announcement) / “Extreme Conditions”

Ongoing programmes will be suspended.
If the above-mentioned weather condition(s) is issued or remains in force 3 hours before the commencement of the programmes, the programmes will be cancelled.

2. Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 3 or Red / Black Rainstorm Warning Signal

Ongoing programmes will continue.
If the signal is issued or remains in force 3 hours before the commencement of the programmes, the programmes will be cancelled.

Other indoor programmes (including pre-booked group guided tours)

1. Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 8 or above (including Pre-No. 8 Special Announcement) / “Extreme Conditions”

Ongoing programmes will be suspended.
If the above-mentioned weather condition(s) is issued or remains in force 3 hours before the commencement of the programmes, the programmes will be cancelled.

2. Black Rainstorm Warning Signal

Ongoing programmes will continue.
If the warning signal is issued or remains in force 3 hours before the commencement of the programmes, the programmes will be cancelled.

3. Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 3 / Red Rainstorm Warning Signal

All programmes will proceed as scheduled.

Outdoor programmes

Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 3 or above / Red/Black Rainstorm Warning Signal / "Extreme Conditions"

Ongoing programmes may be suspended subject to actual weather conditions.
If the signal is issued or remains in force 3 hours before the commencement of the programmes, the programmes will be cancelled.
Due to variations in actual circumstances for each programme, please refer to the individual event details for special arrangements in inclement weather.

^#If the Education Bureau announces class suspension, programmes for kindergartens, primary schools, special schools and secondary schools will be cancelled.
